Also, strikes are internal — my company pissed me off — and boycotts are external — that other company pissed me off. The players clearly aren’t mad about sports. It’s pretty easy to see the boycott framing imo; they are boycotting American society

Right, but technically the term for that is a "secondary action", in this case a "secondary strike" or "solidarity strike"

It's become all muddled up because our idea of a "boycott" is always a "secondary boycott" (someone from outside a company tells you not to buy from that company)

"Primary boycotts" are almost always associated with strikes and get folded into the concept of a strike -- the idea of a primary boycott is just "don't cross a picket line"

But a solidarity strike needs a primary strike to be showing solidarity with Who’s the primary strike here?

Enh, it's stretching the definition but you could call that the BLM protests as a whole

Okay but what do you call support of a protest movement by refusing to do business with the protested entity

Or a laborer though, I think When actors refused roles with the Weinstein Company was that a strike Or let’s say some hypothetical construction company turns down a contract to build a new chik-fil-a, is he on strike? Or boycotting?

I think a boycott can be any refusal to do business What about ad companies pulling out of Facebook? Strike or boycott?

I mean, a company-to-company relationship is a customer relationship, so yes, I'd put it in that category The key thing is the NBA players are refusing to perform the jobs they get paid for and risking termination

I still say that withholding a good, labor, or service can absolutely be a boycott
