A lot of people are bashing this person online but these are awesome questions! Since I have an advanced degree in math, let’s see if I can answer them in 240 characters or less! https://twitter.com/aIeturner/status/1298372968838508546/video/1 …

This young woman doesn't deserve the hate she's getting. She's basically asking if Math is discovered or invented. There's a good youtube video from ted-ed that she should check out.

This is one of the deepest philosophical questions. For thousands of years philosophers have been trying to answer it. Classic volumes have been written about it. We’ve made a lot of awesome discoveries but the basic questions remain unanswered.

It's funny you say that because in the ancient world the concept of *negative* numbers gave people a ton of trouble -- and clearly you can make an argument that they are, in fact, "imaginary" (like all the jokes about "negative money" meaning glowing antimatter dollar bills)

But the idea of balancing a checkbook -- i.e. of double-entry accounting -- was legitimately a technological revolution when the Romans started doing it, it meant you could organize businesses on a much larger scale than before

The idea that seems obvious to us that you have to keep count of all the money you lose as well as the money you gain -- as opposed to just having a running count of how much money you have -- was legitimately weird and mindbending for ancient peoples

It ended up becoming the norm across the world because, well, you have to be able to keep track of your debts to have an economy And it's only by generalizing that idea that we slowly got the idea that "negative numbers" were "a thing" in and of themselves

The original comment may have been a joke, but I still appreciate your input. Good information.
