I state at the top that I’m not defending Coleman. My thread wasn’t about him. It was about the language in the tweet I was quoting. That’s all. Of course people are allowed to see red flags in people’s past behavior. Why are you putting quotes around things I didn’t say?

Then what's wrong with saying that if someone engages in extreme harassment or bullying, that is who the person is?

I also agree that what happened to the guy who ended up on the registry at 13 is terrible Jessica Valenti probably does too It has no contradiction at all with her point

It’s wrong bc it’s wrong (morally and factually) to define people by the worst thing they’ve ever done. People make mistakes, they change, they grow. The belief that they do not, particularly with sex crimes, was clearly conveyed by her tweet.

And it was specific to sex crimes, which is specifically wrong. Recidivism rates are persistently lower for sex crimes than other crimes, and they are highly responsive to treatment. That on top of the fact that in general, crime is substantially more common during adolescence.

The avg recidivism rate is ~4% for adolescent sex offenders. It’s not some permanent pathology. Now, again, there is evidence that Coleman has not changed or grown and I have no problem with saying he should not be an elected official.

She said "revenge porn and extreme bullying and harassment" Only the first of these is defined as a "sex crime", and that was recently, as a result of the huge uphill struggle to get it defined as a crime at all You are arguing against something she never said

All of this is a clear pathologizing of adolescent sexual behavior.pic.twitter.com/MEHFLz4tqU

"Revenge porn and extreme bullying and harassment" looks pretty clearly to me like it's lumping all these things into one category Revenge porn is a form of extreme bullying and harassment, especially when combined with extortion That's the important thing

Look you said elsewhere that you think sex crimes are complicated because they're typically committed within intimate relationships I think that's a problematic thing to say but let's table that It doesn't apply at all to this case This isn't about romance or "sexuality"

Aaron wasn't dating any of the girls he harassed, he wasn't in a relationship with them The girl he blackmailed said he was a total stranger who "found her on Snapchat" The issue at hand is *bullying*, that these are people he singled out *in order to attack and harm them*

I think it's very clear from what Valenti said that she's talking about "extreme bullying and harassment", i.e. this deliberate pattern of setting out over time to hurt somebody If you want to read her as talking about other stuff that's on you

And this is why, honestly, people say edgy stuff like "Rape is not a sex crime" Putting sex into the mix doesn't change that an act of cruelty and domination is what it is The revenge porn and hounding the girl telling her to kill herself aren't fundamentally different
