Are you just using my tweet as an opportunity to riff about your own thing or do you actually think I’m disagreeing with, like, any of what you wrote here?

I state at the top that I’m not defending Coleman. My thread wasn’t about him. It was about the language in the tweet I was quoting. That’s all. Of course people are allowed to see red flags in people’s past behavior. Why are you putting quotes around things I didn’t say?

Then what's wrong with saying that if someone engages in extreme harassment or bullying, that is who the person is?

I also agree that what happened to the guy who ended up on the registry at 13 is terrible Jessica Valenti probably does too It has no contradiction at all with her point

It’s wrong bc it’s wrong (morally and factually) to define people by the worst thing they’ve ever done. People make mistakes, they change, they grow. The belief that they do not, particularly with sex crimes, was clearly conveyed by her tweet.

And it was specific to sex crimes, which is specifically wrong. Recidivism rates are persistently lower for sex crimes than other crimes, and they are highly responsive to treatment. That on top of the fact that in general, crime is substantially more common during adolescence.

The avg recidivism rate is ~4% for adolescent sex offenders. It’s not some permanent pathology. Now, again, there is evidence that Coleman has not changed or grown and I have no problem with saying he should not be an elected official.

She said "revenge porn and extreme bullying and harassment" Only the first of these is defined as a "sex crime", and that was recently, as a result of the huge uphill struggle to get it defined as a crime at all You are arguing against something she never said

Maybe it's because the previous tweet mentioned the "abuse of women" And yes, it is absolutely evident that Coleman's pattern is misogyny -- every single person he's done something shitty to, major or minor, has been female But that's also not the same as "sex crimes"

You're the one who moved this conversation into something that it wasn't It's probably indicative of the harmful way the media talks about shit like this (misogyny is a much much deeper topic than sex or lust) But you are the one derailing

(I regret that so much of this talk has become about "revenge porn" and technicalities about "child pornography" and whether the laws about CP should apply to children themselves etc He tried to blackmail someone via humiliation, isn't that enough)
