Okay so you're preaching nuance but actually eliminating it yourself Valenti didn't say "sex crimes", she said "extreme bullying or harassment", which has no necessary sexual component You're arguing against someone else here

There was no "sexual" component to Coleman's act of cyberbullying at 14, even though it's arguably the worst of his crimes -- someone almost lost her life because of it It was a gendered crime (he picked on her because she was a girl) but there's no indication of a "sex crime"

And yet I'd be far more worried about voting someone who did that into office -- something that, in many jurisdictions, isn't a crime at all! or at least not easily charged as one -- than someone who, as you say, groped somebody ("sexual assault in the 3rd degree") at 13

I do, in fact, think that the old Law and Order line about "sexual offenses being especially heinous" has led to some really messed up priorities in our legal system, the sex offender registry as it currently exists has got to go, etc. This has nothing to do with that really

When talking about shit people did as a kid I care less about whether there was a "sex crime" involved that whether there was a pattern of sustained and intentional cruelty (the "dark triad", if you want to get fancy)

Animal cruelty may not be that *much* of a crime -- David Huckabee got off without a scratch due to lack of witnesses of what, specifically, he did to the dog before killing it -- and people can argue about how bad it is in utilitarian terms ("You eat meat, don't you?")

But I sure as fuck don't want David Huckabee near any position of public authority and it seems like his family agreed There's all this shit that's *not even illegal* that are valid reasons for someone to say "That's a bad kid who's gonna grow into a bad adult"

I would sooner vote for the guy who punched someone at the age of 13 than the guy who spent the year from the age of 13 to 14 consistently leaving comments on one of his classmates' LiveJournals "You're going to die alone and nobody is going to miss you"

And I don't think "being a dick" or "being creepy" should be illegal! I think there are anti-harassment laws and they should be more stringently enforced, but yes, I think actually arresting people for what they say online is probably something we want to minimize

But I'm still allowed to *make judgments* about people based on their behavior I don't think the guy who leaves the "Kill yourself" comments is necessarily irredeemable but if you want me to interact with him again in any capacity I'd very seriously ask "Okay what's he like now"

And if the answer is "I dunno, he has no footprint since then" then my answer is "Okay then he's a no from me"
