One of Holmes' most memorable traits from canon, being a "master of disguise", has been almost completely discarded by modern adaptations, because it doesn't fit at all with the idea of a Sherlock who's a total basket case with no social skills who hates dealing with peoplehttps://twitter.com/loudpenitent/status/1298782000908603392 …

Sherlock Holmes' most consistent quality is not some sort of emotionless smugly sadistic intellectualism, it's his compassion for those without others to help them (and his amused contempt for much of the official law enforcement) https://twitter.com/snarkbat/status/1298712492026155008 …

The second one is my favorite contemporary version of Moriarty at least because he's not some Sherlock obsessive and he doesn't even particularly care about Sherlock except he's an impediment

He's an honest to gosh head of a criminal empire who can tell which way the wind is blowing and figures its a good time to get into weapons and munitions

Game of Shadows isn't a smart movie exactly but it is sort of striking how many adaptations of Sherlock Holmes don't do more to situate him in the context of the end of the 1800s with the benefit of modern hindsight, almost for dramatic irony even

His Last Bow was famously a Sherlock Holmes story that makes him a British secret agent on the eve of WWI It's generally not that well thought of, since it veers a bit far into patriotic jingoism and it raises the stakes beyond credulity

I guess A Game of Shadows was deliberately trying to fix that, involve Holmes with WWI in a darker more cynical way that pushes the more thematically consistent message that war is in the long run just another kind of crime

(The biggest criticism of His Last Bow is the whole point of the story just doesn't make sense Doyle was still thinking like a mystery writer and not a spy thriller writer There was *no reason* to arrest the bad guy at the end and take him prison, at least none given)

(If you've completely earned an enemy agent's trust and you've become his primary source and fed him all kinds of bad intel, you absolutely DON'T want to arrest him and take him prisoner You want him to go back to Berlin thinking he's done an awesome job)
