I get their desire to open already and I get that the threat level is regionally varied, but also yeah, there's no fucking way I'm going to a theater right now.

I think there's even broader blame too when you look nationally. At what point does the most common sense answer for various industries become "if the people and government won't take this seriously, then why are we the ones falling on this sword."

in physics we can distinguish between mechanical explanations and systematic explanations--between accounting for a gas's behavior through the motion of each particle, or by simply applying general laws of thermodynamics. the same applies to politics.

to whit, we are at every moment assailed by evidence of catastrophic local failures--schools, movie theaters, restaurants, states, etc. etc. etc. but that's just counting particles. there is a truer answer: THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT COULD HAVE SOLVED THIS PROBLEM AND DIDN'T.

I don't know if you could do it profitably, but it does seem to me that movie theaters would be one of the better places to reopen, actually: you have big spaces where people already typically distance, and you can keep your mask on and not talk.
