A lot of people generally show their ass on this issue, like just not getting that strikes are Serious Business, take a lot of effort to organize and are dangerous as hell for the workers A wildcat and/or illegal strike may be *justified*, morally, but is incredibly risky https://twitter.com/AnaMardoll/status/1298313951768444930 …

If you don't have the organized numbers to win an election, it's incredibly unlikely you could win a strike All the shit that makes it hard to win an election - the propaganda and the apathy and the ignorance etc etc etc - is SO MUCH WORSE for a strike

People actually think that you can "crowdsource" organization, that with the Internet you can just get a bunch people to click on a http://Change.org page or something to say "Let's have a strike!" and it happens Like this is why I despise all the "Facebook strikes"

(They are almost never strikes, they are boycotts, which are fundamentally less likely to be effective than strikes, and they aren't true boycotts but purely symbolic ones "Nobody do any shopping this Sunday!" Fuck off, shut up, go away)

A lot of people think that's what a strike actually is and it's fucking up their sense of how everything works and it's really damn depressing

I still remember the actually horrific meme going around of someone making a "rent strike" email template to send to their landlord Like if you just personally don't pay your rent and you call it a rent strike and tell them lots of other people are doing it, that's a strike

It's fucking insane Whoever made that thing was straight up ruining the lives of anyone stupid enough to believe it But it's perfectly suited to an Internet world where people think joining any organization should be as simple as clicking on something with your phone

Joining a rent strike is as simple as putting the hashtag in your email about not paying your rent Joining a boycott is as simple as taking some bullshit pledge on Facebook Strike for higher wages by just not coming to work and telling your boss "Lots of people are doing it"
