No People arguing Facebook should proactively ban fake news and people applauding ActBlue for cutting off Coleman are making the SAME argument That these private companies can and should make value judgments to serve the public interest, rather than act as "neutral middlemen"https://twitter.com/ryangrim/status/1298443492943966208 …

The argument that ActBlue should ignore what's going on in KS HD 37 and just treat Aaron Coleman like any other nominee and "let the voters decide" is exactly like arguing Facebook should just "let readers decide" about COVID-19 misinformation

It's an especially silly argument for ActBlue, which is a nonprofit PAC with a nakedly partisan mission statement, to advance the Democratic Party through enabling small dollar fundraising You might as well say ActBlue is "biased" because they don't fundraise for Republicans

ActBlue cut off Coleman because not only is the institutional Democratic Party unified against him but it is manifestly obvious that him continuing to campaign as a Democratic nominee is harmful to the party's reputation

Maybe someday ActBlue will intervene on behalf of the party in this way and they'll be doing something wrong because the party is on the side of wrong That's as may be, and you can save your protests against ActBlue and the Dems for that day

But there's no betrayal here, no breaking of rules or contracts ActBlue is doing the job they're explicitly set up for The fact that you perceive them as nothing but a payment processor doesn't mean that's what they actually are
