Oh so here's the thing- the change in power wasn't something people were actually really aware of, but it was that change in power that helped spur on just a TON of bad shit going down because it allowed for GOP obstruction of any Dem action

Basically after Obama was elected the GOP policy became obstruction above all else so suddenly all these crisis started piling up more and more every year and the constant tenor became about having good people in power who just weren't doing anything

So the desire became for simplicity and powerful morality over complex nuance and gray morality

I'm just saying 2013/2014 is about when the whole "done with dark" era started and this is my best approximation of why then, like this was the first time I remember a dedicated "is this too dark?" Discourse for Man of Steel

I want to say there were at least stirrings before then, because I /know/ I ~knew I should be ashamed of my taste in fiction, and not tell anyone about it or else I’d proven I deserved any abuse/bigotry that happened to me, etc., before I was 18

There was definitely a "down with dark!" Thing going on in the buildup to Avengers vs. Dark Knight Rises (I have no idea relative ages between the 3 of us but at the time superhero media was a major circle so that's my best yardstick)

Now to be sure in 2008 Dark Knight absolutely ruled the world, dark was still in the rage then, so I think the beginning of the end might've come in 2010?

I think at the time this was thoroughly grounded in a change of aesthetics? Like this was also all about stark minimalistic realism vs colorful cartoon quirkiness, like Scott Pilgrim vs Expendables was a total thing

There was a lot of triumphalism over the idea that the reason Batman vs. Superman and Justice League tanked so hard was the fact that they were "grimdark" and not that they were bad
