Planescape: Torment has the whole thing where the Sensates have a brothel where the ladies have graduated from actually fucking the customers to engaging with their various intellectual interests

Cue the whole joke about how intercourse is only $500 but if you want to spend the time after talking about your nerdy obsessions then it's $1000

It’s called The Girlfriend Experience and those prices are about right for 2020.

So you're saying for the same price as a therapist, I can get a hotter and less judgy therapist

i don't think they're licensed to practice therapy but that doesn't stop people from treating cam shows as them.......

My edgy take is honestly that the requirement for a licensed therapist to a huge extent is just rent-seeking and that you really are just as likely to be helped by talking to some rando whose job is talking to people (bartender, call-in DJ, sex worker) as your average LCSW

I mean I imagine a lot of the value of a therapist is just someone who you can talk about very private things to without a fear of judgement or facing personal consequences, but also there's probably value in having people with specific training in ethics and etc

There's a lot of people in the therapy field mad as hell about the proliferation of people doing therapy-like things with no qualifications at all ("life coach", "spiritual guide", etc) Which lets them compete on price

And they're right that there's a lot of shitty scammers doing stuff like that But my whole thing is the real therapists, as a class, really aren't all that much better Ultimately anyone paying anyone for this stuff has to go in eyes open

I say this especially because of my growing dislike of the increasingly universally applied "evidence-based" therapeutic approaches like CBT

Not the same kind of CBT you'd go to a sex worker for, although I guess you could ask for both
