Yeah - I think the problem generally is that while people (like us, especially) like to spend a lot of time talking about complex cosmologies, the way religions become successful is spending more time stressing everyday good deeds.

You get a bigger audience with a soup kitchen than a "and HERE is why the world is an evil illusion created by a blind god"

I always liked how, when you get right down to it, the morally "best" faction in Planescape is the Bleak Cabal They have no grand plan to fix everything, they just run the city's soup kitchen and the homeless shelter

The Followers are more proactive, I think, like the Bleak Cabal are pretty firmly set in their understanding that the world can't be "rebuilt" or even improved in any large-scale way

That's kind of the idea, that with Sigil being the fulcrum of Creation and all, everyone who genuinely has some kind of ideology about how the world could be better comes to the city to try to take it over and convert everyone to their beliefs for the greater good

The *reason* the Bleak Cabal are able to be humane and compassionate to ordinary people is that they've given up completely on such a mission and strongly discourage even starting to think about the world in such terms Which is a, you know, bleak feature of the setting, but hey

The Bleakers aren't my favorite faction even though they're obviously the one I'd be in real life Kind of because by definition they're not suitable for player characters Like their faction weakness as written straight up makes them unplayable

(Every day you roll a slowly increasing probability that the Bleak Cabal PC will suddenly be overwhelmed by despair and need a "mental health break" where they lie down motionless all day until they get treatment at the Madhouse Hence most of them don't venture far from it)

Kind of a ridiculous mechanic to write into a character that's supposed to go adventuring at all But also, Big Mood

The old criticism of the Bleak Cabal is that they're a very edgelord take on existentialism with bad jokes about mental illness Like, it's possible to engage with the idea that the world has no ultimate WITHOUT rocking back and forth and slamming your head into the wall etc.

To which I can only reply, those criticisms were not written in the Year of Our Lord 2020

Can you REALLY think about how bad the world sucks without screaming at the top of your lungs and clawing off shreds of your own skin and writhing spasmodically until you pee yourself Well GOOD FOR YOU THEN
