While I agree, it's important to remember how limited made for TV animation was back then.

Man I guess I don't really have a bone to pick because I didn't have to suffer through the seventies but there's something so absolutely bitter about the fact that Japan was making Space Battleship Yamato and we were making fucking Hong Kong Phooey (no offense to Scatman)

I do think about how easy it is for an anime to become a huge hit in America if it's a "love letter to American culture" even if it's not actually very good A lot of Speed Racer fans didn't even know it was an anime

To be fair, I'm not sure anime was even an industry term in the west at the time. Anyone remember when it was called Japanimation? Lol

Speed Racer includes an episode where Speed is attacked by extremely stereotypical ninjas (in ninja-themed cars) but the dub says "assassins" because "ninja" was not a word in America at the time

It's actually funny how much of a westaboo show that was One of the most racially dicey moments in the Wachowskis's remake is Pops Racer beating the shit out of a ninja because he's a champion Greco-Roman wrestler from his college days But this is extremely true to the cartoon

Pops does not fight the ninjas in that episode but he does reveal he was a champion wrestler in college and use good old wrassling to beat fancy martial arts when he fights a stereotypical Japanese biker gang (I guess "punks" wasn't a word back then either)

Amusingly, lots of modern MMA people would say this is completely accurate WRT wrestling vs. most "traditional" martial arts.
