I mean do people who make this argument keep the same energy for ordinary working class Germans and Japanese in WWIIhttps://twitter.com/nberlat/status/1297591700500746241 …

people were born into the union, and chose to fight to preserve slavery. as a white person, you didn't have to be a slaver to profit materially and/or psychologically from a white supremacist system. this bullshit is not class analysis. it is the opposite of that. https://twitter.com/dantobias/status/1297574947498401792 …

A lot of ordinary working class folks ended up on the wrong side of the American Revolution and had to flee to Canada but you don't see a lot of people disrupting 4th of July parties waving the British flag

Maybe I should try barging into 4th of July parties with the Ontario flag - I haven't really had the opportunity before now because every 4th pre-Covid I've been flying up to Toronto for the long weekend (so I've missed both Independence Day and Canada Day pretty consistently).

I feel like, in the era of COVID-19, the descendants of the Loyalists who had to flee to Canada pretty clearly got the last laugh

I think "have the last laugh at Americans" has consistently been a pretty significant bedrock of Ontario culture - it was almost broken by the Rob Ford era but then y'all elected Trump

at least when we elected a buffoon mayor the city council ultimately stripped him of every power that wasn't statutorily nailed down and assigned them and his budget to the deputy mayor
