The one makes up for the other. Is there a lot of Adoptionism in the SU fandom? I don't keep up with it.

Arianism keeps getting reinvented in new regions colonized by Christianity all over the world because, bluntly, it makes more sense than Athanasianism Mormons are American Arians, the Taiping Rebellion was Chinese Arians

It feels like if you're a Christian from antiquity the only reason not to be Arian is because you really like Jesus a lot Like, I haven't read the gospels but I'm pretty sure Jesus never actually says "I'm God, I made the earth, you gotta worship me, specifically"

Yeah, or because you didn't like Arius (or more generally, the faction he was a part of)

I think the other issue is that it's much harder to be an Arian and also a monotheist; especially if you're in late antiquity, Arianism really opens the door to letting in a lot of potential OTHER begotten children of God, including Zeus if you want him.

There are some Jewish roots here too; 2nd Temple Judaism seems to have some emerging elements of binitarianism, sometimes referring to "two powers in Heaven." Orthodoxy in Judaism and Christianity was agin it.

Right, the doctrine of the Metatron was specifically to acknowledge the concept but immediately demote the Metatron to nothing but a scribe/mouthpiece In direct contrast to the Gospel of John stating flat out "The Word was with God and the Word was God"

When Enoch sees the Metatron in God's throne room he gasps in astonishment "So there ARE two seats in Heaven!" (but it's ironic, the scribe's chair is not a throne)
