I remember how 20 years ago everyone was handwringing over how no one took comic books ("sequential art") seriously because everyone equated the whole medium with superhero stories And now, that's no longer true, because superhero stories are taking over EVERY mediumhttps://twitter.com/Nymphomachy/status/1297461455617511424 …

Lol now you can't make a comic book OR a movie that makes any money unless it's about some Batman horseshit Comics have taken their revenge upon cinéma, everyone has fallen under the sway of the cape

And, like, as a response to this "indie films" will evolve into the same thing as "indie comix" Just getting more and more aggressively self-indulgent and weird because the people making them know they will only be consumed by other people who also make indie comix

Lots of black-and-white autobiographical shit where the filmmaker talks directly into the camera about his sexual kinks

It's kind of interesting that caped superheroes haven't really taken over video games that much, even though Scott McCloud said outright he thought it was the most natural medium for the "superhero power fantasy" in Reinventing Comics

It's almost like that's so clearly baked into the medium of modern AAA gaming -- with the regenerating health and the checkpoints and so on -- that it's going too far to explicitly spell it out in the in-story setting

I'm thinking back on original game IP clearly in a superhero setting, and some of the most explicit was City of Heroes - and it's actually a bit tricky to make the stakes seem genuinely superheroic in an MMO.

Speaking of stakes I kind of wonder why I haven't really heard of a modern MMO attempting the Matrix Online thing of having employees do basically the Disney character thing by puppeting plot characters. Presumably they figure it's not worth it.

MMOs have swung hard away from the whole "It's an actual simulation of a living world!" thing, the big-budget ones have gone full "themepark" ("This is essentially a prewritten single-player game that you have to play as a team")

that's what I'm saying though, there's a model of theme park where you can banter with Darth Vader or whoever (or at least see them do some interesting live event where you might see something interesting happen) maybe they don't work for the demographics of MMOs?

Yeah I don't think they think it's worth it anymore
