I have great respect for Gail. But I do write fiction, so while it's not my *job*, implying people are morally deficient for not thinking Superman can plausibly be good is still something that stings a bit

Is it that much to accept that for some of us "what if the world was drastically different from how it really is, in a good way" is soul crushing rather than comforting as a premise?

No, but I conversely would request some respect/praise for the writers that do figure out how to deliver that premise while immersed in the same basic human soup as the rest of us. It's not easy, and it takes work and talent. And to some of us, it helps.

And I understand not finding that angle. Absolutely, but I wouldn't give you those characters if you can't. Because they're less fun when you're kicking them down a peg than when you're actually solving that core narrative problem, IMO.

I certainly would never want to write Superman. But it's my opinion that Superman himself is a broken promise when written realistically. He was created in an era when no real verisimilitude was expected from comics; he's been outdated for decades.

I truly do not see the asset or value of telling stories about a guy who can... just fix everything. Because if he hasn't, he's an omnipotent God who hasn't done that, and such a God is an enemy of humanity, not its ally

I think it's super interesting to find why he can't fix everything. And he can't. And it's interesting to see the places where he shouldn't be able to and he still does. I think "Superman is strong and has superpowers" and "Superman can fix everything" are different things.

And hey, yeah, that's another part of it that needs to get solved when writing Superman. It's been done right. A lot, actually.

But my point isn't even that. If you don't like the character that's fine. But there's a difference between not buying Superman as a good guy and making Superman as a bad guy. One thing is fine, the other is boring and simplistic and reductive.

I just don't buy Superman. I find stories with him depressing, bc either we have to accept he's a callous bastard letting people suffer and die, or we have to just assume he's fixed the majority of bad things we deal with and everyone in his world is absurdly lucky

Thinking too hard about Superman from a "realism" standpoint after they beefed his powers up absurdly in the 60s will make your head hurt and is best avoided

But for the record, I do like THAT deconstruction of him. Like I said elsewhere, the Moore take, where you're always sort of aware of his alien-ness and different culture and worldview and stuff. If you're gonna go full Watchmen do it with someone else, but it's cool.
