Once we got into my high school gym I knew I was kind of safe but like by that point I'd seen too much I'd become kind of terrified of my date And to make matters worse, I didn't know anyone at my new high school so I was basically in a gym full of complete strangers

Also, I'm not really INTO dances—I only wanted to go to one with a date because I wanted a girl to pay attention to me But I immediately no longer wanted that attention And kind of broke off, floating around the gym in the almost-darkness, feeling extremely alone and trapped

There were these two cops at the dance I kind of casually said hi to them conversationally, asked them if they were bored I guess the thousand-mile-stare on my face must have set them off because the vice principal and a dean cornered me a few minutes later and patted me down

They were cornering me like I was planning to shoot up the dance or something, asking me a bunch of pointed, interrogative questions So I had to defuse the situation and like promise everything was okay and that I wasn't planning something They told me to leave the cops alone

So at this point I'm still stuck in this gym until the dance ends, I'm hiding from my date even though she's the only way I can actually get home, the cops are watching me closely for my horrible crime of conversing with them, the school authorities think I'm trouble

I did get roped into dancing with my date at one point I think it was pretty pathetic I'm sure I must have looked shaken, traumatized and miserable

She definitely knew I was unhappy but like we never really talked about it She might have felt kind of guilty, like underneath all my teenage edge I was a pretty introverted and sensitive kid and this entire night had visibly freaked me the fuck out

She wound up driving me home and honestly I never really talked to her again I think I was scared of her for the rest of her time at that school, I avoided eye contact with her, shit like that

It was a really scary night. One of the scariest experiences of my childhood. I'm probably not even articulating it well from my perspective of it having been more than half my life ago

And honestly that's the kind of fear that sticks with me, to this day The fear of things that look innocuous on the outside but gradually unfold their weirdness and their wrongness after you've opened yourself up to them

Yeah, like the thing we talked about where David Lynch goes beyond exploring "liminal spaces" to "liminal people" People who don't quite act the way they're supposed to, there's something *wrong* with the way they respond to you, with the way they react

yeah there was this time I tried to be polite to someone on the street because my first impression of them was that they were intellectually challenged but then I suddenly realized this person was sexually harassing me

To take a more mainstream example than most, this is something I've always really appreciated about the first Terminator. Between the script and Schwarzenegger's performance, the Terminator comes across as deeply *wrong* in a way the sequels never really even tried to recapture.

Like, Robert Patrick makes a cool baddie in T2 and does a good job, but he's clearly playing a villain. The first film's Terminator isn't really anything as recognisably human as that.
