To take a more mainstream example than most, this is something I've always really appreciated about the first Terminator. Between the script and Schwarzenegger's performance, the Terminator comes across as deeply *wrong* in a way the sequels never really even tried to recapture.

Like, Robert Patrick makes a cool baddie in T2 and does a good job, but he's clearly playing a villain. The first film's Terminator isn't really anything as recognisably human as that.
