So I'm just sitting there, not sure what I've gotten myself into But I'm trying to fit in, like if these guys want to talk about drugs I'll ask them questions about drugs So I asked them if they had ever tried shrooms and they both looked at me hungrily "You got shrooms?"

And of course I just kind of panicked and stammered "N-no... I was just trying to make conversation..." and kind of trailed off in my classic deer-in-headlights kind of way I don't remember saying anything else for the rest of the occasion

There was still time before Homecoming started so we got driven to some dingy, cluttered apartment to hang out And this was 2004 probably? Like I did NOT have a cellphone yet, or money, and this place was not within walking distance of my house So I was at these ppl's mercy

I just remember that these boys were REALLY scary white boys with like anger issues and shit. I don't remember what they looked like, probably lanky stubbly dudes, one of them had long hair, generally kind of a Columbine sort of vibe And these guys weren't really happy either

Like one guy had a temper tantrum at the apartment and started strumming sulkily on his guitar The other guy almost came to blows with him over... something, I don't remember, it was this really intense shouting match and they had to be pulled away from each other by the girls

All that was terrifying and weird to me but where it REALLY got scary was when some of these people started getting the idea to just skip the dance altogether and get a bunch of booze and drugs and just hang out at the apartment getting completely fucked ...I was fourteen soooo

I honestly can't remember if I said something or if my date noticed the full-on absolute crisis mode on my face and said that I was young and my mom would freak if I came home wasted (or didn't come home at all) and so that seemingly rerailed us back toward the dance

But I remember these guys were like super pissed and honestly I don't know if any of them other than my date actually wound up going to the dance I definitely think at least one or two of them stayed at the apartment My date drove me to the dance in some dingy car

Once we got into my high school gym I knew I was kind of safe but like by that point I'd seen too much I'd become kind of terrified of my date And to make matters worse, I didn't know anyone at my new high school so I was basically in a gym full of complete strangers

Also, I'm not really INTO dances—I only wanted to go to one with a date because I wanted a girl to pay attention to me But I immediately no longer wanted that attention And kind of broke off, floating around the gym in the almost-darkness, feeling extremely alone and trapped

Man this is the kind of story where everyone would see the problem if your date had been a guy but the gender flip makes it seem more acceptable even though it isn't

Yeah lol there was a time when I used to tell this story a lot I don't think I've told it since becoming what I am, I wonder if that makes it hit different in the telling of it
