Like the knee-jerk categorization for a story like this would be "creepypasta" but I'm coming around to the Jenny Nicholson definition of creepypasta as "what you graduate to when you're slightly too old for Goosebumps."

Like, the Russian Sleep Experiment fucking sucks. Jeff the Killer fucking suuuuuucks. Slender Man sucks. Ben Drowned sucks. These attempts at being scary are garbage.

Yeah it's scary because there's no supernatural twist that takes you out of it, it feels like something that could've happened

Creepypasta has a common failure mode of going too far and breaking the spell When the tentacles and demons and portals to the void start coming out etc

It's like stage magic Penn Gillette pointed that out when he did his video of "reviewing magic in movies as a real-life magician" Stage magicians often talk about how it's a *very* common failure mode for a magic trick to go "too far", "too perfect"

He points to the line in The Prestige where the promoter guy says that "You must leave room for doubt" when he first sees Angier's teleportation trick -- he has to *wait* before revealing himself so it's *barely possible* he sprinted through a hidden passage to get there

Gilette just says that watching the teleportation trick, if he saw it in real life he'd just be like "Okay yeah that guy is actually a pair of twins, or an uncannily similar actor made up to be a double"

"I'm an adult, I know magic isn't real, so if you show me something that's ACTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE like that I'll end up accepting whatever improbable silly thing must be the truth, like Sherlock Holmes said" Breaking the magic circle, the suspension of disbelief

It's similar to how a disappearing trick is, for an adult, much more impressive if you do it *without* a giant puff of smoke that indicates you set off a hidden charge

Or, like, him pointing out that this magic trick they sell online where you first pass a pencil through a quarter, then hand the mark a "blown out" quarter with a hole drilled through the middle, is far far worse than the version where you hand back a normal quarter

I'm a grownup, I know you didn't actually melt a hole through a quarter with your magical powers, which means if you hand me a quarter with a hole in it I now know for a fact you switched my quarter with the fake one that you bought from a magic store like a loser

It's the room for doubt, the whole question mark where "I don't know what actually happened, it can't be what he said happened but then WHAT DID happen" that impresses people In both magic tricks and in creepypasta, where the point is to blur the line between fiction and reality
