Couldn't you use the black powder with modern cartridges just using the inferior propellent instead of modern propellent? I mean it'd lower muzzle velocity but for at least one gun you're manufacturing non-standard ammo for on the spot anyways.

The primary reason for the invention of so-called "smokeless powder" isn't the lack of visible smoke but the lack of particulate fouling it leaves behind (the smoke is just the part that comes out of the gun) Smokeless powder is what made the concept of an autoloader feasible

A black powder weapon can't be semiautomatic or automatic, and it needs to be built to allow the smoke to escape and to let you clean out the chamber after every firing You can tell an old black powder revolver because of the "nipples" on the cylinder for that purpose

Good point. Of course honestly automatic weapons seem inexplicably uncommon in this world, despite being *extremely* common or easily obtained through modification in the US.

It's a gameplay choice, the Fireflies in 1 have a ton of them and Joel wanting to get his hands on them is his whole initial motivation

I'm aware, it's just a pretty transparent gameplay thing, though honestly they'd also be pretty bad choices tactically in a world where ammo's relatively scarce.

Honestly if they do another entry in the series I'd like it if they adopted the Metro thing with pre-war firearms and ammo and other such items being valuable as currency for traders.

Frankly I kind of like that TLOU doesn't have stores. It's a nice change from the RPG mechanic where people buy your wads of used chewing gum and if you have enough chewing gum wads saved up you can trade them for a nuke

See I don't agree, because traders are clearly A: a *thing*, and B: inevitable in such situations. But that's why you make the currency something actually valuable and not just "sell vendor trash."

Yeah but like, TLOU alludes to having traders - Joel literally is a weapons merchant at the start, and in 2 we find he's traded a bunch of his stuff for coffee (and Tommy gets Abby's location from traveling traders). But where would they be in story?

That's kind of the whole deal in TLoU, that you never actually "complete the quest" and get paid with the awesome guns you wanted

The whole main quest is failed, yeah. Should've popped up a "you have broken the chain of destiny" window
