I don't actually want more hate directed at Maïmona Doucouré but I would like the discourse around this movie to acknowledge that she, you know, exists The fact a woman made this movie isn't a universal pass from it being problematic but it at least complicates this narrativehttps://twitter.com/netflix/status/1296486375211053057 …

Also I want to know how the story got started that it's an NC-17 film, when you can see ON NETFLIX that it's TV-MA

I hate the feeling of being a "defender" of a movie I haven't seen that, frankly, I don't want to see but this is turning into a full blown Qanon-level hoax, it's a repeat of James-Gunn-gate Only Doucouré is a Black French woman who's 100x more vulnerable careerwise than Gunn

(One of the friends I lost over that whole thing asked me how I'd feel denouncing Gunn's attackers if it did turn out he were a serial child predator I wonder if they're asking the same question about Doucouré now)

The gendered double standard is justified to an extent, of course - cishet men are *more likely* to be predators than other people It's still wildly irresponsible to just throw accusations like that around, about anybody, and the more marginalized they are the harder it'll hit

It's not like I "defended" James Gunn in the sense of saying his jokes were good - they were awful and should never have been said I didn't even care that much about whether or not he should be fired It's using the story to launch a "cabal of pedophiles" conspiracy theory

That's what's happening here, people straight up demanding that Maïmouna Doucouré be arrested or killed (a lot of them not even knowing who she is, thinking she's a man) and then immediately segueing into a Qanon rant about rooting out all the pedophile Illuminati

If you don't understand how dangerous this is you aren't paying attention And I'm saying this as someone highly receptive to the argument that Cuties may be a bad movie that shouldn't have been made

Replying to @arthur_affect
Netflix makes it very easy to start watching a movie with very little context for what you're about to get into, which is fine a lot of the time, but some of the more avant garde stuff probably benefits from more context. Going to the one arthouse cinema is a choice, y'know?
