It's pretty telling how consistent it is that when European settlers assimilated into Native communities they never expressed any interest in coming back but when the reverse occurred people tried to escape and return constantlyhttps://twitter.com/perdricof/status/1295440935157989377 …

apparently when the lost colony wrote "croatoan" on a tree they literally meant "we are going to live with the croatoan" and then "nobody could find them" because they assimilated and i guess that was unimaginable to the subsequent english https://www.pilotonline.com/news/vp-nw-not-lost-20200817-qgmblubzt5dyjm3jrcop25ssoq-story.html …

It’s neat we finally have proof of this because I was always amazed it wasn’t obvious to the English that showed up later. I mean I love the monster stories we got, but come on now.

I'm reminded of a movie I saw where a character comes home from college to find his parents have "mysteriously disappeared" despite the many signs that they retired and moved to Florida, including the voicemails they left him that he hasn't checked

We’ve always had proof, though. The Lumbee People have *always* told everyone this was what happened. It’s been known for centuries. White people have just been unwilling to accept the evidence. There was never a “mystery” beyond “Why deny the historical record?”

I didn’t know that. But that makes sense. Of course we didn’t listen.
