Do you think I'm actually trying to hide my ethnicity in any meaningful way If I didn't want people to know my parents were immigrants I'd probably have changed my first name to something other than "Arthur"https://twitter.com/taro_taylor/status/1294596982862827520 …

How could you, bro? That's the whole point of my post. You couldn't change who and what you are by the simple fact of insisting on a western name. You are the same Asian bloke regardless what your name is.

Yeah, exactly Nothing I said has anything to do with wanting to be perceived as white or Western

This whole thing came up because of people trying to republish old books written by women writers under male pen names under their legal names as though they're freeing those dead women from some kind of legacy of shame My point is that's a stupid and presumptuous thing to do

That's the premise of your thread? But why not right the wrong if one could? At least we can learn about the actual authors albeit posthumously. And still can't see how that ties in with your denial of your chinese name.

You don't get to decide for anyone else which name is right and which name is wrong

It's this framing of "denying your name" that bothers the hell out of me too George Eliot never *denied* she was Mary Ann Evans, she copped to it pretty quickly, it was extremely publicly known for most of her writing career

She just preferred to be published under and quoted as the name she picked for herself when she became a writer That's her right You can call her a traitor to women over that if you want but the polite thing to do is respect her wishes
