And the original VA for Go Mifune (Katsuji Mori) sounds a lot more like Elvis, with a smooth baritenor voice, while Peter Fernandez does a much more nasal "teenage" voice (Possibly because Fernandez, unlike Mori, was 40 irl and having to play a guy half his age)

It's funny because Speed Racer is so famous for having a horrible dub but honestly in context it's actually pretty good There's bad dubs that are bad because of bad artistic decisions and open cultural disrespect The Speed Racer dub is bad because they gave them a week and $50

There's four total VAs on the Speed Racer dub team Corinne Orr (Trixie, Spritle all the women and children) Jack Curtis (Pops, Inspector Detector, all the older men) Jack Grimes (Sparky, Chim-Chim, all the "goofy" men) Peter Fernandez (Speed, Racer X, all the other men)

Fernandez was not officially cast as an actor He was the writer/director for the dub and decided to play Speed Racer himself "for free" to save on having to ask the studio for more money for actors One of the unsung heroes of the early years of importing anime

I mean in terms of actual quality the dub is amazingly awful but you can tell it's literally because they had to record each episode in one day The bad syncing is because they really tried to get it all done in one take (in an era before digital editing)

Hence the total lack of any processing people have noticed (wherever the characters are, their voices sound like they're sitting in a recording studio) And how there's no Foley, all of the dub sound FX are hilariously blatantly just the same stock sounds again and again

I guess I've talked before about how "versatility" is an overrated quality for actors, especially voice actors, like being a good actor isn't about "how many voices" you can do

That said, back in the struggling caveman days when it was normal for a studio to ask one guy to dub a whole cartoon by himself for as little money as possible, "versatility" starts to matter more Like a lot of Speed Racer episodes are just Fernandez talking to himself

And the desperate need to make the bad guys not sound like Speed Racer just talking to himself is why the Speed Racer dub has so many villains with extremely thick accents and campy voices All the gangsters are from that one gangster area of Brooklyn (the Henchman District)

Anyway it's funny because as a cultural artifact Mach GoGoGo was so clearly this love letter to Americana (Elvis, fast cars, rock music, explosions) And America received it as an extremely weird piece of Japanese culture (the archetypal "bizarre anime dub")

The Wachowski movie definitely plays with this, like it's in many ways an extremely American movie and American story and yet in many other ways it's this deliberately bizarre setting where you're not sure what country they're actually in
