One weird irony of the American Speed Racer dub is the original Japanese show Mach GoGoGo was an homage to Elvis and the dub obscured this connection a lot Go Mifune/Speed Racer is clearly dressed like Elvis' character Lucky Jackson from Leaving Las Vegas

That said, back in the struggling caveman days when it was normal for a studio to ask one guy to dub a whole cartoon by himself for as little money as possible, "versatility" starts to matter more Like a lot of Speed Racer episodes are just Fernandez talking to himself

And the desperate need to make the bad guys not sound like Speed Racer just talking to himself is why the Speed Racer dub has so many villains with extremely thick accents and campy voices All the gangsters are from that one gangster area of Brooklyn (the Henchman District)

Anyway it's funny because as a cultural artifact Mach GoGoGo was so clearly this love letter to Americana (Elvis, fast cars, rock music, explosions) And America received it as an extremely weird piece of Japanese culture (the archetypal "bizarre anime dub")

The Wachowski movie definitely plays with this, like it's in many ways an extremely American movie and American story and yet in many other ways it's this deliberately bizarre setting where you're not sure what country they're actually in
