I think my problem with "gritty" is that it so often goes hand-in-hand with "takes itself way too seriously", and it's the latter that exhausts me. Even something like The Dark Knight, which has a lot of *fans* who take it way too seriously, had some good moments of levity.

i bounce off things PRETTY hard when they do not evince signs of taking themselves fairly seriously that said, I also bounce off things pretty hard when I don't think they're having any fun things can definitely do both!

I like when the two are mixed masterfully Like, I'm sorry, again, TLOU2 where the tutorial for movement is a friendly snowball fight vs. kids w the heroines joking abt kicking their asses and then it turns out it's also foreshadowing Ellie's moral decline into threatening kids
