I talked about this article a while ago and how destroying the Internet wouldn't really be that hard (the main thing protecting it is that it's valuable to people and people across the world spend a lot of time and money keeping it up)https://gizmodo.com/how-to-destroy-the-internet-5912383 …

One big reignited Cold War between two superpowers, like the escalated US/China conflict Trump keeps obviously jerking off to the idea of, and "the Internet" as we know it starting to fall apart is extremely plausible

I mean, the rise of the Internet has been, for the most part, riding on the global economic boom we've had coming out of the '80s For all the hiccups we've had since then (including the big one in '09) we haven't seen the "digital economy" withstand a Great Depression event

We're kind of spoiled, with this ongoing assumption that bandwidth and storage just keeps getting cheaper and cheaper and cheaper over time -- Google confidently talking about more and more stuff getting "too cheap to meter" over time, throwing more and more shit onto the "cloud"

I still don't actually think COVID-19 is likely to lead to a serious economic apocalypse where lights start going out worldwide But it looks a lot more *possible* than it did a while ago, especially if international relations break down and war looms on the horizon

completely half-assed take: the internet is in fact a part of the liberal international order built and maintained by the united states, not merely a private-sector adjunct to it it is in that respect more like NATO than like Apple
-
the internet isn't something we found, it's something we built, with large and expensive physical and human infrastructure supporting it and, surprise, what humanity has built humanity can tear down or turn into a walled garden

Not the US, but Canada Post is the best parcel delivery service in Canada. FedEx, ups, and Purolator have nothing on Canada Post for pickup options and people not being jerks. Ups is terrible. Like once a month, same person, I can't give you this without id even tho I kno its 4 u

But at Canada Post it's like oh hi May are you looking for a package? Lemme get that for you. Oh no you're a regular just sign i don't need id.
