Presidents would still pretty clearly be able to designate successors The Deputy PM position in other countries doesn't work like the VP position and they don't have primaries the way they do but it's still the obvious way to position yourself as the next PM

Britain is particularly weird in this respect because we sometimes have a Deputy PM and sometimes we don't. (The Labour Party has a post of Deputy Leader, the Conservative Party doesn't.)

Missouri has a fairly weak-executive system at the state level, but one of the particularly interesting features about it is that Governor and Lieutenant Governor are elected separately. They aren't even necessarily from the same party!
