I think a lot about how the inevitability of former vice presidents winning presidential primaries, combined with the incompetence with which both pre-VP Biden and Harris ran in primaries before being selected, effectively indicates presidential primaries are non-democratic

The voters having an apparently perverse preference structure isn't really the same thing as the system being "non-democratic"

Yeah. It’s one thing if someone runs unopposed. But if voters flock to a former VP who has plenty of competition, like Biden had this year, that’s not anti-democratic.

I mean, by all accounts, the reasoning Biden gave to Obama and others for breaking his original promise not to run in 2016 is that he strongly believes if he'd been the nominee he'd have beaten Trump Because of, among other things, that VP cred

Biden being a man is also a huge factor here. A lot of voters are far more comfortable voting for him because of his gender.

There's a chicken and egg thing here about how Biden was Obama's VP pick in the first place precisely because he fit this reassuring image of a "normal old white guy politician" And if Hillary had been VP that might not have helped her the same way it's helped him

*Her* calculation seems to have been "Secretary of State is a job with a defined role and means I'll have an actual résumé to prove my competence rather than just being seen as Obama's affirmative action sidekick" Didn't work out in the end though
