I think a lot about how the inevitability of former vice presidents winning presidential primaries, combined with the incompetence with which both pre-VP Biden and Harris ran in primaries before being selected, effectively indicates presidential primaries are non-democratic

Yeah, the only one of the random white guys who got any traction in 2008 was Edwards, and again - name recognition from being the VP candidate in the 2004 campaign.

Yeah, that (half) supports Pepper's thesis. Bill Richardson had had an interesting career HRC had high name recognition Obama was a symbol as much as anything Edwards had just been there before. Obama won on the appearance of both youth and newness, though.
