I can't pretend to have a complete psychological analysis of why Mary Ann Evans/George Eliot made this choice (in contrast to, say, Charlotte Brontë, who dropped the Currer Bell pen name as soon as she could) Much less one for every author on this list

That's why it seems to me it's best to just respect their wishes I won't say the impulse to do this is necessarily coming from a TERFy place but you'll notice all the people angrily defending it on Twitter are TERFs, who are strongly invested in one particular narrative

The idea that "genderbending" can only be something oppressive forced on people by patriarchy and to say that there's anything inherently valuable or real about it is offensive (i.e. being "gender critical")
