Okay so typically in anime I assume the characters are meant to be Japanese unless otherwise specified, and in Speed Racer's case the original characters have conspicuously Japanese names (Go Mifune, after Toshiro Mifune) But then why does the Mach 5 have left-hand drive

I went and looked up footage of the subbed version of the original Mach GoGoGo episodes, the dub didn't mirror it -- the driver's seat is always on the left-hand side including in the opening credits

Honestly, given that the whole point of the show is driving, I almost consider this definitive proof the character is meant to be American (the whole thing is built from clichés taken from American racing and car chase movies)

i mean the thing is that anime occasionally exists in a weird phantasia america where many of the details are more japanese

It's an important question for determining whether the 2008 Wachowski movie is "whitewashing" and therefore problematic

I maintain it would have been better with Japanese American actors anyway (means you wouldn’t have Emile Hirsch).

That movie was made seven years before his arrest though, so you can't really call it an error of judgment from the Wachowskis, unfortunate as it is
