Okay so typically in anime I assume the characters are meant to be Japanese unless otherwise specified, and in Speed Racer's case the original characters have conspicuously Japanese names (Go Mifune, after Toshiro Mifune) But then why does the Mach 5 have left-hand drive

Honestly, given that the whole point of the show is driving, I almost consider this definitive proof the character is meant to be American (the whole thing is built from clichés taken from American racing and car chase movies)

I mean, Speed Racer spends a lot of time traveling internationally, and if the Mach 5 really is his only car then there's a lot more countries with LHD than RHD, but this is honestly overthinking it

Jiro Kuwata's "Batman" manga (1966) has the Bat-Mobile as a left-hand side driver. Also, Speed Racer manga (1966) also have him seated on the left-side. If not American, than it's definitely inspired by western racing tradition.
