I went and looked up footage of the subbed version of the original Mach GoGoGo episodes, the dub didn't mirror it -- the driver's seat is always on the left-hand side including in the opening credits

Honestly, given that the whole point of the show is driving, I almost consider this definitive proof the character is meant to be American (the whole thing is built from clichés taken from American racing and car chase movies)

I mean, Speed Racer spends a lot of time traveling internationally, and if the Mach 5 really is his only car then there's a lot more countries with LHD than RHD, but this is honestly overthinking it

it's cool and different, like the right-hand drive in Corvette Summer! :)

Under rated film that.

TIL that Japan is as contrary as the UK. I assume that the characters in everything are meant to be Japanese, regardless of whether it's specified or not. Pokemon? Japanese. Peaky Blinders? Japanese. Ben Hur? Japanese.

Yeah Japan is one of the few RHD countries where it's *not* because they were part of the British Empire In fact, Japan may have pushed the rest of Asia toward LHD, with countries like North and South Korea defiantly switching after WWII as an anti-Japanese thing

Spending big money on an import that's not even configured for your country's driving scheme sounds like a proper gearhead thing to me. Speed and them are just showing off that he can fuck them up with a backwards car. They're flexing Inigo Montoya stylepic.twitter.com/YlYfXOPA1C

It's not an import though, Pops Racer specifically built that car from the ground up (the pilot two-parter is Pops being fired from the factory he works at because his boss disapproves of his blueprints for a radical new design)

At least from some manga I’ve gotten the idea that some wealthy people have left hand driving imported cars as a status symbol. Could be wrong, though.
-
This is correct, though it doesn’t apply to the Speed Racer canon. Until relatively recently, German imports were all left-hand drives so the inconvenience was a status symbol.
