I wouldn't even find it unbelievable if Joel destroyed any and all work on a vaccine as a final act of spite.

I would. Joel isn't spiteful! Again, for all Tommy says Joel made him violent, Tommy is the only one we see take revenge for Sarah! Before any of that!

Tony guns down a soldier who's shooting his and his wounded niece. That's not revenge, that's self-defense.

Sure. I'm just saying, the fact that there is no evidence either of them pulled a TLOU2 type crusade into the interior of Austin to dispatch the guy who ordered Sarah killed indicates Joel is not innately vengeful, and literally nothing about his character deals w vengeance

Like "survival" is Joel's thing. The revenge theme of 2 is NEW. I think it's VERY clear Joel cannot survive without Ellie at the end, which is why he makes the choice he does. If she were dead I think he would probably still attack, yes, but he'd die quickly and on purpose

(it interestingly occurs to me that the final level of TLOU has the same morality as the Matrix final battle: the enemy wants our friend's brain, and rather than sacrifice him for the greater good, we're going to do an Uncomfortable White Man Shooting Spree)

That reminds me the first time I finished the game I went 100% stealthy, in part because that's how I had played up to that point, and in part because I was certain that this being clearly the "final level" I'd be overwhelmed by tons of mooks if I got seen…

Terry still got a bullet in the groin and another in the stomach in the end.

Sorry, but if your brain surgery is going to kill the patient no matter what despite the fact that we can remove the skullcap and cut open the brain to remove tumors without killing the patient, this means you lack either the equipment or the skills to operate.

Well whatever it was he needed to do he needed to harvest large amounts of the fungus at once, which was completely intermingled with her brain tissue, rather than just taking out something like a tumor It's like taking out the ADAM slugs in Bioshock

Also, I doubt they have the precise, well maintained tools from before the apocalypse or the opportunity to sharpen their specialized medical skills for nearly two decades. The infrastructure that can train brain surgeon was long gone.

The the fireflies should have switched gears and focused all their resources into rebuilding it: the infrastructure may be gone, by there are certainly enough medical books still lying around.
