Or, rather, it can be fun to speculate if that's the ambiguous ending, but if you have to build a whole new story on top of it it just brings all those questions back and makes it an act of nitpicking. Suspension of disbelief applies, but it didn't work for me.

Which is both dishonest and foolish given how violent and nasty Joel can be. Had Ellie died and Joel lived It would have ended with Joel murdering as many Firefly as he could.
