The interesting thing about Speed Racer 2008 being an adaptation is that the fact that the Wachowski sisters are huge weebs probably posed more of a barrier for them than if someone else got hired to make a movie from that license Like, weebs specifically hate Speed Racer

Most normal Gen X Americans born in the 60s just remember Speed Racer as one of the kitschy little icons of their childhood If you were actually into anime, you remember it as the show that spawned all of the negative stereotypes of anime you argued with your parents about

The show wasn't actually *that* popular in Japan, it also wasn't objectively all that good, and it became a staple of US Saturday morning cartoons for basically random business reasons where they got the foreign license extremely cheaply

Which is probably how it’s evaded the whitewashing discourse all this time

I mean when they dubbed the 2008 Wachowski movie into Japanese they didn't even bother to "re-localize" it with the original Japanese names, everything stayed the same The movie was sold as Speed Racer and not Mach Go Go Go

There is a major conversation to be had about appropriation here, and the way the movie handles its Asian characters isn't unproblematic That said, they weren't really taking anything Japan really wanted to keep

I recall Speed Racer as the filler for weird afternoon hours on weekdays and really early AM. It wasn’t all that good tho to 6-year-old me it looked different. That said the “G” on everything used to confuse me.

As I recall, there was an American tie-in comic that tried to reconcile this by saying "Speed" Racer is just his nickname and his legal first name is Greg

Mainly it's just really funny that so little effort was put into the English dub that no one noticed there was a G on all his clothes or thought the viewers would notice And then they just went and named him "Speed Racer"

I don’t remember the comic. I was just fascinated by the races involving goofy supervillain concepts like the train-like thing or drills in the wheels. And the weird sound effect when the Mach 5 would jump using what looked like brake shoes.

The Mammoth Car, the wheel-spikes and the jump-jacks all, of course, are shown off to great effect in the live-action film

The film looks like it would be great while high as a kite on acid or shrooms OR the most dangerous thing you could possibly do in that state.
