The interesting thing about Speed Racer 2008 being an adaptation is that the fact that the Wachowski sisters are huge weebs probably posed more of a barrier for them than if someone else got hired to make a movie from that license Like, weebs specifically hate Speed Racer

Part of the movie in the middle is essentially a Speed Racer cartoon in and of itself. This fight scene is a part of it. An incredible amount of affection and craftsmanship went into this sequence. If you watched Speed Racer as a kid then you'll see it.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-1lqrYcNTo …

Yeah, the premise of the original cartoon revolved around cross-country rally races (logically enough, since that's a lot more interesting than going around a track), and the middle section of the movie with a rally race is the most "authentic" part of it

They sort of lampshade this, that the movie version of Speed Racer is a more realistic racecar driver whose career mostly revolves around legit track races and the rally race is this big unorthodox scary challenge he undertakes

(One where all the wacky shit the cartoon got up to with the cars having actual weapons and the drivers openly trying to kill each other gets lampshaded, the Casa Cristo is this glamorous outlaw event)
