I'm an unapologetic Chris Nolan fan (because, again, no one greenlights films about things I'm interested in NOT made by problematic Tories or whatever) but seriously that "hero Gotham needs/deserves speech is infinitely confusing and makes more sense

When you hear it the first time, it's a fairly normal sentiment, it's just a compliment -- "We don't deserve him" The second time is this ironic reversal, this backhanded compliment at Batman -- Batman can't actually fix things, he's a failure, but he's our failure

I always liked the line from the B:TAS episode that directly addresses the "Does Batman create his own villains" question "He didn't create you, you created him"
