I'm an unapologetic Chris Nolan fan (because, again, no one greenlights films about things I'm interested in NOT made by problematic Tories or whatever) but seriously that "hero Gotham needs/deserves speech is infinitely confusing and makes more sense

Like, there are probably nineteen sixty minute videos each for "explain how the dreams work in Inception" and "explain how the trick works in The Prestige" but someone really needs to just do an analytic philosophy symbolic diagram of that needs/deserves thing

Gotham DESERVES a hero who is willing to sacrifice their own legend to protect the city but they NEED a hero who would never let themselves be tarnished by impurity

...I thought it was mostly the other way around? Like Gotham deserves a morally pure hero but they NEED one who will break the law to save them?

No, Batman is the "deserves" one, Harvey Dent is the "needs" one What Gordon is saying in the ending of TDK is this grimdark thing about how Batman can never actually solve the problems he's fighting against so the war will never end

And this is Gotham's own fault, their own apathy and corruption created a system that can never be fixed from the inside, it can only have someone like Batman doing damage control from the outside, and that's what the grimdark world of a city that needs superheroes means

(This is mostly contradicted by what plays out in TDKR but whatever)
