"Is that worth it to you? Is that how you wish to be remembered, as your final accomplishment before your death? If so I recommend you try your advance now, before your fellows lose their nerve to follow behind, and you die for nothing"

And the piece de resistance is Baley getting even more freaked out afterwards, saying Daneel must be malfunctioning and needs to be shut down "A robot CAN'T DO THAT"

"The First Law of Robotics, right? He can't even *allow* a human life to come to harm and he was threatening to fire into the crowd! His finger on the trigger!" "The choice was clear. The riot would have risked many lives. The threat was necessary to protect human life"

"You can't make that calculation! You're not supposed to even be able to risk human life! That makes you a danger to every human around you!" "There was no risk. You misunderstand. Here" *hands over gun *

And Elijah examines the gun and tries to pop the mag out and he can't There is no mag, there's no mechanism, the whole thing is solid metal, it's a prop And it dawns on him "A bluff...?"

"For obvious reasons, it was deemed illogical to issue me a working sidearm. As I said, the analysis was simple. The threat was sufficient to disperse the crowd and save lives. Had they, as you say, called my bluff, only a robot would have been destroyed."

"The calculation was simple. Under the Three Laws, no other course of action was possible"

I'm overthinking the moment, but it seems like the worst-case for the riot is that it starts with them mobbing and tearing a robot to shreds.

Well, Daneel was pretty confident in his odds He understands humans better than people give him credit for, just like Elijah understands robots better than people give him credit for

Yeah, I'm nitpicking. But it's really striking as both a deconstruction of masculinity, and then its *re*construction. It's being what men say they aspire to be, but fail to do.

Keep in mind that Daneel believes this to be the only possible course of action because he's the only robot cop on the force If they did call for backup, and it turned into an actual fight, humans on both sides would be put at risk So he has to intervene

Yeah - and then in comparison to human male cops IRL, who are repeatedly shown that, for all their fetishization of their own manliness, are utterly unable to control their own emotions.

Who in fact refuse to engage unless they have overwhelming odds on their side
