I will just put myself out there and say that particularly as a veteran I find caring about Star Trek generally real fuckin embarrassing and think the franchise really has had questionable value

The TOS in particular, like every man on the show has these really intense Daniel Craig dadfaces and I don't get why that makes so many geek girls so damp

Isaac Asimov had personal experience with the fact that his character R. Daneel Olivaw had that effect on geek girls, especially in the context of his unshakable loyalty to his buddy Elijah Baley, and advised Gene to just rip that off wholesale for Spock

It seems striking here that while both characters strongly resembled humans, they were not human men.

There's this whole forbidden fruit thing where they represent toxic masculinity caged This sense they *could* become just another violent predator in theory but they *must not* (Vulcan logic, Three Laws of Robotics)

That's one key way in which Daneel was more like Spock than Data, he wasn't playing the childlike naif, in some ways he was more badass and macho than Baley

A *lot* of nerd women apparently swooned over the famous scene where Daneel quells the anti-robot riot with, essentially, the Dirty Harry "Do you feel lucky" scene Only in this very cold, clinical robot tone

Baley is freaking out and like "We need backup" and Daneel goes "No, one officer is sufficient for this situation" and then just walks out in the open holding his gun going "The first person to touch the steps of this building will be shot"

"I know what you are thinking You are thinking I am armed with a tickler or a neuronic whip That I am outnumbered 100 to 1 and if you rush me, you might suffer temporary pain, perhaps even permanent nerve damage, but you will disarm and overpower me"

"This is not a tickler or neuronic whip It is a blaster, and I am trained in its use The first person I shoot will die, instantly So will the next, and the next after that"

"You will not overwhelm me or disarm me or beat me to death Those who follow after you may, but at the sacrifice of your life Your life will end, here and now, they will bury you in the ground and record your name on a list of regrettable casualties"

"Is that worth it to you? Is that how you wish to be remembered, as your final accomplishment before your death? If so I recommend you try your advance now, before your fellows lose their nerve to follow behind, and you die for nothing"
