I will just put myself out there and say that particularly as a veteran I find caring about Star Trek generally real fuckin embarrassing and think the franchise really has had questionable value

Okay but also Roddenberry has less to do with the characterization of Trek characters than most people think? And Kirk as a jock is really kind of more meme than reality (at least in TOS: there's several episodes where it is noted he was a shy *nerd* at the Academy).

Shatner, Fontana, and Nimoy all said Coon really did more to cement Trek's personality and you can really see this when you watch stories where Roddenberry had more control, like The Cage, The Motion Picture, or most of S1 TNG.
