There's a bunch of stories about him from undergrads that finally led the Amherst College Dems to withdraw their endorsement, which provoked this outcry about how this is neoliberal sabotage

One wrinkle to this story is that he's gay (one of the youngest mayors in the country when elected 9 years ago and one of the first openly gay ones) and these are male undergrads, which has led his defenders to accuse his critics of homophobia

I mean this is just like the situation with Judith Butler's friend. She was a woman and it was a young guy, so it was Woman Power and thus okay. The entire idea of giving out "passes" on this invalidates the concept of stopping abuse that isn't male against female cishet

I mean, if this was mainly a question of whether he should be fired, and he never slept with anyone underage or currently being advised or in his class, I'd say just sternly talk to him.

That was the official policy for me as a professor (I didn't have to worry since I was in a relationship and I could just date people from a few towns over if I wasn't): don't sleep with YOUR students, but please, don't sleep with any students.

But frankly the whole thing has a very Mr. Jefferson quality to it, by which I mean from the College Dems statement he was building popularity on social media based on his status as a professor, and then crossing personal boundaries

They have dismissed him as a guest lecturer and it's because of him specifically looking for hookups when coming to speak at College Democrat events

Like I think this principle applies to any situation where an older person is working with college students, even if it's not in a course being taught for credit In this case it's really obvious how the "informal student org" is a bigger deal than the poli sci classes

These are people who want to make a living in politics, their history with the party and their connections with politicians are as or more important than their grades
