I love how a white television actor kissed a Black woman to collect a paycheck once and now his stans think he's the Rev. Al Sharpton

I know the rules are different for cishet white guys but usually when a person lives a very long time, we expect them to do more than rest on the laurels of a thing they did fifty years ago

Also, in context, the scene is of the two of them being MIND-CONTROLLED into kissing each other as a HORRIBLE VIOLATION by evil aliens The whole lead-up to it is them struggling desperately to keep it from happening

The way I remember it, Uhura actually apologized to Kirk. Which is a little bit progressive in terms of how society viewed men and consent, but the racial dynamic complicates it. Apparently making it non-consensual made it *more* tolerable to network censors.

This is a whole thing Hays Code said you could portray "taboo" or "illicit" sexual encounters but only if you *made it clear* they were supposed to be taboo or illicit, often by adding elements that objectively make them problematic

You couldn't show someone cheating on their spouse and have the relationship itself be a positive thing It had to involve rape/coercion, or alcohol/drugs, or be otherwise physically or emotionally abusive It had to lead to some kind of tragedy

Yeah, that tracks with conservative views on sex. Tangentially it reminds me of Kdramas I've been watching, which are supposed to be very wholesome, and I've never seen a single on-screen first kiss that doesn't come as a non-consensual surprise to one or both parties.

Like it's somehow more acceptable if the characters don't want to kiss and do it against their will, and therefore get to preserve their innocence.

Fanfic takes this whole dynamic and runs with it, over the goal line and right out of the stadium
