Because the two factions involved were not sanctioned by the government and had no easy access to firearms, and the construction of bows and arrows has traditional significance This surreal scene of people in modern clothes, T-shirts and jeans, launching volleys of arrows

But, you know, it may look like a LARP to an outsider but it's deadly earnest Photos from the ER showing people with arrows in their ribcage, a guy who died almost instantly from one getting him in the eyesocket

what's interesting to me is that this is exactly not the case in the United States this country is lousy with guns, they're easy to acquire, indeed one side in this conflict is *already carrying them* but not a single person pulls one out and shoots someone

as if we had agreed to a show battle--as if we had agreed to settle a dispute by LARP! and you still have to actually go out and fight, arm against arm, will against will. what it shows is this weird blend of dead-serious violence and mutual rule-following

It really is fascinating to watch. Part of my brain is all about this. Good exercise for everyone involved. A bit of managed violence etc. Not necessarily the wisest part of my brain mind you. Or maybe it is.
