Plus his goal is never to recreate civilization: it's to survive long enough inside an infrastructure that ALREADY EXISTS to be rescued and come back home. It's much easier to suspend your disbelief in this movie.

The Martian and Lost in Space diverge significantly from Robinson Crusoe in their relationship to the outside world: the problem-solving in these newer stories really needs external support and that tells a very different story than the fantasy of the civilized super-Protestant.

I think Swiss Family Robinson actually did something similar way back then, but for different reasons and to different effect.
