Given how much of that movie was improvised, I've wondered if that whole bit wasn't Nicholas Brendon's idea in the first place. At the very least he leaned into it with his full body weight.

I was at a Q&A at a festival be the director talked about it and said while the lines were improvised the characters and the story weren't, he gave them an outline and let them work from it In particular the outline made the show Roswell because he wanted the indirect reference

(His statement is technically incorrect, Xander appears in every episode of Buffy except S7E7 "Conversations with Dead People", a "high-concept" episode where the cast each face a personal crisis alone The fact that they couldn't think of one for Xander is telling)

(To the point Penelope has repeatedly made, they were thinking of having the First Evil come speak to Xander in the form of Jesse from all the way back in the pilot, but abandoned the idea, possibly because they couldn't get the actor back)
