Honestly I understand why it would've been traumatic for them to dig it up before trying the spell but not doing that probably made it much more traumatic for her

compromise and just, like, dig up the casket without opening it? [though, there is a theory floating around that sunnydale cemetary just buries people in dirt in order to make it easier for turned vampires, don't know if canon ever confirmed it]
